Euro iTunes on June 15?
By Jonny Evans
Apple Europe will present a special music-focused event in London on June 15.
The company describes the event thus: "The biggest story in music is about to get even bigger," and is inviting selected members of the press to the event in London. The show starts at 11am.
Apple is likely to announce the extension of its iTunes Music Store into new territories at the show, putting the company in the frame against chief US rival Napster which launched last month; Sony's much-criticized Sony Connect service and existing European services such as OD2 or London's innovative Wippit music service.
At this stage it appears possible Apple will launch its service with an offering of around 700,000 tracks. Napster today announced itself to be offering that number through its service, while Sony Connect will launch with a smaller catalogue here, reports claim.
Apple representatives declined to comment on the invitation, saying: "our message is that this event takes place June 15 – come along and see".
Pricing for Apple's service is likely to be within the £0.89-£1.09 per track charged by the other digital music distribution services that exist here. Apple has neither confirmed nor denied this assumption.
The UK is the world’s third-largest music market with per capita spending on music exceeding that of other music-buying territories. The UK accounted for 9 per cent of global music sales in 2002 and 8.3 per cent in 2001. In 2002 the UK spent $2.936 billion on music.
In May Apple announced that its US-only iTunes Music Store sold 3.3 million songs in the week following the release of iTunes 4.5.
“Our third-generation iTunes Music Store just blows away any other online music service,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs at that time. “With over 700,000 songs and innovative features like iMix, it’s the easiest to use and most fun to use online music store in the world.”

I hope not. If they are able to get it to all of Europe they would once again Trump Napster. And it would have made the delay worth it. Let's hope it is the entire EU and not just the UK.

I doubt that Germany will be in it. The German music industry has their own music store system called phonoline, and they rather want others become front-end to their phonoline system than operate a competing store system.

It looks like I will be spending with Apple again!!
There are lots of tracks I have been after for a while, and hopefully I will be able to buy them next week. If the price is right of course.
I would love a new iPod as well to replace my 30GB and 60Gb will be perfect when it arrives.

Let's just hope that the pricing isn't as absurd as Napster's. If it is, then sorry, I won't be buying a thing.

That would suck *so* badly.
Germany, IIRC, is the largest music market in Europe (or 2nd-largest after GB?)...

Phonoline sucks! And all major labels know this. So iTMS will be a good alterernative.
We will know more in a few days.

Try this instead (waring - bad music)
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/M...istId=15028259
Also, if you click the Browse button and browse Rock for example you will also find Herbert Grönemeyer, Klaus Lage Band, Udo Lindenberg, Wir sind Helden etc. Or Die fantastischen Vier in Hip Hop/Rap. Though they don't work.
I think the fact that Apple removed Helge Schneider and the others aren't working either proves that the music store is not coming to Germany on tuesday yet.

Not long to go now, who's excited?
I hope we get a 1 Million song catalogue as well, making it the biggest on the internet.
I presume there will be new artists added as there are many vary popular European artists who are not fully represented on the store.
For instance All of Robbie Williams stuff is not available.
Nothing from Lulu
One album from Steps
No new album from Will Young
Only 3 Erasure albums when they have over 12 out
Only 3 Kate Bush albums
etc, etc
There is a lot of stuff they need to add to have complete collections for some European artists.
I will be looking to add to my collection by filling in missing items from the artists I collect, at the moment this is not going to be possible. Let's hope the numbers go up to reflect the Euro music tastes
There are a lot of very county specific artists, who are huge in each country, but will hardly be heard of outside it, even more so for the non English speaking countries.

I for one am very excited. But I do think that they must extend their collection quite a bit, I'm missing A LOT of stuff on the current iTunes Store. I also hope they keep the price at 99 eurocents. And not above 1 euro.

I hope the prices are resonable in Europe. There are so many Taxes there that it wouldn't surprise me if it was a little more.

Yep exactly. Taxes always add a great deal to the price. And there is always the "Apple-tax", that little premium that Apple wants from us. Even when ruling out taxes, Apple products are always more expensive here. I'm fearing something like €1.30 to €1.50 for a song. And that's just too much. $0.99 = €0.82 now if you add let's say 20% in taxes and apple-tax you come to a price of €0.99. So it's completetly doable. But I fear for the worst.

They really have to be less than £9.99 per album or they won't get my custom.
Most new albums are available in UK supermarkets for £10 or less.
If tracks are going to cost more than £0.99 they will also have a problem as that is nearly $2

If things were being priced like for like then the prices should be as follows :-
US single track - $0.99
UK single track - £0.54 (€0.81)
US album - $9.99
UK album - £5.46 (€8.28)
But those prices don't include an taxes that the EU might apply, if they stick on 21% which Apple seem to use for other purchases (like .Mac) then the prices would be :-
UK single track - £0.65 (€0.98) - pretty close to €0.99 a track !
UK Album - £6.60 (€10.01) - again pretty close to €9.99 an album
It would really make sense if they went for €0.99 and €9.99 but I'm expecting it to be more.
Ian

I really, really hope your predictions are right... 65p a track seems about right, as does £6.60 an album. Just cheap enough to tempt people. Anything over this would be too much.
although I'm not holding my breath. This is Apple UK we are talking about so they could do anything...

If this is true:
Indie labels no-show on Apple iTunes Europe?
By Jonny Evans
Apple's iTunes Music Store Europe may launch with limited tracks from UK independent labels, sources claim.
A source from within the UK's Association of Independent Music (AIM) explained: "Talks have been ongoing over the weekend, but I'm hearing they broke down today." It appears Apple has presented terms to Europe's independents that are unacceptable to them, and the computer company is not prepared to shift its position.
If this report proves true this will mean Apple will launch its store – at present anticipated to open for business tomorrow in the UK, France and Germany – without key musicians that define the UK market.
Independent labels account for 25 per cent of music retail sales in the UK, and 22 per cent across Europe. There is an extensive list of successful independent artists including: Travis, Basement Jaxx, Franz Ferdinand, Dizzee Rascal, So Solid Crew, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Royksopp, The Pixies, Lemon Jelly and Coldcut.
While some of these artists are available through Apple's US store, European digital distribution rights must still be secured. The source suggests that at present it appears likely that no songs from any of these artists or from larger independents such as Beggar's Banquet will be available through Apple's service, though they warned: "This may still change".
Independent US label Six Degrees – which has experienced "excellent results" on Apple's US Music Store – has declined to sign up for Apple's European service. Sources say this is because the terms on offer from Apple were unaccptable to the company.
While Macworld doesn't possess full details regarding Apple's negotiations with the independent labels yet, it appears the computer company is attempting to implement deals the independents consider to be "commercial suicide" in the offline world.
Apple declined to comment on this story.
Then it will be a major disappointment to me - and many others...
Ho hmmm!

The German music industry is indeed trying to pull their own system.
That being said, from what I heard, they are not getting their acts together.
Even if the iTunes Store would not be able to open in Germany, I don't think that under EU law you could shut out people in Germany buying online in England or France.
So basically, if Germany is not in, you would just by somewhere else in Europe. That, of course, would put some real pressure on the German MI.

Doesn't look like there is any live coverage. Macworld.co.uk is there, and will be posting after the event, looks like we'll have to do with that.
...and keep checking iTMS, seeing if the "not available in your country message" disappears

I'm not too optimistic about getting it here at the Fringe, but who knows. Can anyone in the UK recommend a mail forwarding service like Access USA so I can get a billing address in the UK?

Looks like it might be your lucky day! According to an article in the Guardian:
According to promotional material being sent to shops in time for today's launch, the first European territories to get the company's hotly awaited service will be the UK and Ireland and three Scandinavian countries Denmark, Finland and Norway.
Barney.

11.13 am: Apple CEO Steve Jobs takes the stage:
"We're here to talk about iTunes obviously. We have sold over 85 million songs. It's amazing. In just over one year."
"We have 70 per cent market share in the US."
"The UK, Germany and France – these three represent over 62 per cent of Europe's music sales and a huge chunk of world sales. All the rest of the services are just 30 per cent. iTunes really competes with piracy, not the other services. Piracy is the big enemy – the market has shrunk in France and Germany and seen zero growth in the UK."
"Let's understand piracy first: I found you get really unreliable downloads. You have to try several times to get the song, and then you get it and find it was encoded by a ten year old with four seconds is missing at the end. You don't get to listen first, you don't get artwork, and it's stealing. We offer fast, reliable downloads from our vast server farms – we are very very good at this. It's not stealing, it's good Karma."
"You own the music. No subscription fees. The experiment has been done – people don't want to rent the music, they want to own it. If I have to pay ten dollars a month to listen to my favourite song, that's $1,000 after ten years. I don't want to do that, I want to own my music."
Jobs is now talking the audience through the usage rights. So far identical to the US. "You own the music," he said. Jobs also explained how the service works.
"Web-site music stores suck," said Jobs. "They don't work", he added. Jobs explained how the buying interface and jukebox work as a standalone application that all integrates together. "Some people say iTunes is the best Windows software ever written," Jobs said proudly.
"This is how we have competed with piracy – we are offering a far better service."
Discusses what's available:
5,000 books (with three minute previews).
Gift Certificates - from £5-£100 in the UK. French and German certificates in Euros.
Celebrity playlists: The Darkness; Herbie Hancock; Moby; Dave Brubeck : "There's a lot of these in there and there are more coming every day," Jobs explained.
Music videos, Jobs showed Jamie Cullen's 'All at Sea' video.
"Last we got something really cool we just added, it's called iMix", Jobs said, explaining the way Apple's community-based way of sharing and rating music playlists works. "Less than sixty days since we turned on iMix we had over 50,000 playlists and over 100,000 votes. Jobs showed
700,000 tracks are available for download now, including all the majors and hundreds of independents, and the independents want their tracks on iTunes because it's the biggest and best service in the world. Also classical music.
The songs cost 79 pence each: "every song in the store costs 79 pence, and albums cost £7.99.
In Germany, each song costs 99 Euros, and most albums cost 9.99 Euros. Same price in France.
"Each store with local content"
"We are working on a pan-European store that we hope to have up by October, but these three stores are available today," he said.
Jobs then showed the press and guests assembled for the announcement through iTunes' features: CD burning, album cover art, Party Shuffle; Rendezvous-based music sharing between ITunes users.
Peter Lowe (marketing manager at Apple) is invited onstage to demonstrate wireless streaming of songs. Lowe is using a PC notebook (appears to be HP, but hard to tell).
