I'm trying to properly spell the name "Dvorak" on my Mac (in PageMaker).
I can successfully produce the a with acute accent over it by pressing option-e, releasing those keys, and hitting a.
But the r with a caron/hacek over it is more elusive. Does anybody know how to find this character? Key Caps is driving me crazy.

If it isn't showing up in Key Caps it could be that the font you are using doesn't include that character.
Activate the Character Palette and check which fonts have the character you need - System Preferences>International>Input Menu and tick the Character Palette. This will appear under the "flag" icon in the menubar and when launched looks like this:
You can use insert to place the character you need into your text.
Edit: This assumes you are using 10.2/10.3

Dvo?ák
The r-hacek shows up as question mark (at least here in the forums, probably because to make it show up here you need the HTML entity.)
Do I need to enable the Czech keyboard? Also, my friend for whom I'm investigating this is still using OS 9.

You beat me to my edit! Yeah, I deleted that after I saw how it came out... in OS 9, I have no idea how you would achieve it, but if Czech is supported in OS 9, then maybe switching to the Czech keyboard would work... After a quick looksie, the Czech keyboard in OS X makes the number 5 key on the UK keyboard input the desired letter, so perhaps its the same in OS9

Thanks. Do you suppose any of the standard installed fonts will support this character (or any other Central European characters, for that matter)?

They all could AFAIK... it's just one thing to check if it isn't showing up for a particular font that's all. In OS X at least, it is in for e.g. Lucida Grande, Helvetica, Geneva, Courier, Times, Palatino and New York so I don't see why it wouldn't be in those fonts in OS9 (other than Lucida Grande of course, which OS 9 doesn't have).
