Can anyone tell me how 'secure' Safari is for financial transactions. I'm having trouble doing online banking with my bank. I called their online banking department and they said that they did not support Safari because it is not secure enough and that I should use MSIE or Netscape.
I tried changing the User Agent in Safari to both MSIE and Netscape and that didn't work.
So how secure is Safari compared to the others--I'd like to fight this and get them to accept Safari.
Thanks

Good luck fighting. Safari is just as good as the others. What the bank really means when they say that is that are lazy and they simply aren't willing to commit to Safari compatibility.

Safari supports all of the same security technologies that IE and Netscape support. Your online banking department is, frankly, full of it.

I figured they were full of it too but could not argue because I don't have the facts. Can you direct me to something written that I can print out to show the bank that Safari is secure?
Assuming I get by the security issue can anyone tell me how difficult it would be for the bank TI folks to start supporting Safari? How much work would be involved?
Thanks,

If they followed any kind of Web standards, the effort involved would be… none.
However, if they only support Windows machines they may rely on some ActiveX control or something. That's fair enough, but a bad decision on their part.
If they support Netscape on the Mac, they may just be wanting to reduce their support costs, rather than having any technological reason for it. Badger them — you're the customer. If they won't allow you to use an SSL-compatible browser, take your money elsewhere.
The number of companies I've seen who block non-mainstream browsers for no good reason (and I mean actively block — redirects) is incredible.

Unfortunately, no, mainly because your bank has been too vague.
If you can ask your bank exactly what security technologies they need, however, we can easily prove that Safari supports those technologies.
