Anyone seen anything like this?

I have an email account that fetches mail fine - but when I try to send mail through it mail claims that the authentication fails: (even though it has authentication and that auth works via Entourage)

The dialog is another misleading Mail.app dialog:

When I try with no auth I get this:

I'm not an SMTP expert, but this session I had with the server suggests that It does indeed accept Authentication. (does it not?)

There are a handful of authentication methods available when you set up an SMTP server in Mail (clear text, MD5 challenge-response, etc.). Have you tried them all?

Oh yes, (except for Kerberos - which isn't relevant).

No luck on any of them.

I'd be keen to try talking to the SMTP server via telnet (as in the shot above) - but I'm not sure how to encode my username and password in Base64. Does anyone know a quick and easy way of doing that to strings?

Hmmm,

I've found how to encode strings:

Widebook:~ diggory$ perl -MMIME::Base64 -e 'print encode_base64("Diggory");'
RGlnZ29yeQ==
and this is a transcript of my login by hand:

Widebook:~ diggory$ telnet smtp.vodafone.net smtp
Trying 212.183.156.228...
Connected to www.vodafone.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 Smtp Filter ESMTP Server ready

250-Smtp Filter Hello

AUTH LOGIN

RGlnZ29yeQ==

(Encoded Password Removed)
235 Authentication successfull
Hmm - bug report time..

Meanwhile, I wonder which component Mail is considered part of:

iApps, Mac OS X, Other?

Hmmm - A little more investigation shows that Entourage X (the old one) can send through this server, but Entourage 2004 and Mail.app cannot.

This is really confusing.... The only thing that I can see unusual about this server is that it supports AUTH LOGIN exclusively.
