I have a new Garmin GPSmap 76CS GPS unit, with builtin USB connection. From my PB I can communicate with it using a Kensington USB-to-serial adaptor and a serial cable, but I wonder if there's any way to connect to it directly through USB. I know there's no way to get Garmin to allow a driver for Mac OS X, but does that also mean there is no way to use the PC drivers I installed in Virtual PC (6.1)? VPC doesn't seem to allow me to activate that connection even though I did the installation from the CD.

I ought to be satisfied with the USB-to-serial path, and that allows me to use Mac applications like MacGPS Pro to do nearly anything I want. But for some reason, the updater for the firmware in the GPS unit (yes, there is already an update for this brand new product) requires the USB path. And of course if I could get it to work, it might make map transfer quicker and surer.

Garmin units, like just about every other GPS around, communicate through a serial protocol. You may be able to get the thing to connect for you by trying to install it as a USB modem-that's how they show up on my PC...I haven't tried any GPS units with my iBook, because all of mine are PC Cards.
