for some reason my iPhoto just does not work. I click on the icon, the program opens up on my screen and then the waiting sign takes over the screen saying it's "Loading photos" and that's all i get out of it.
any leads on what happened?

trash the preferences. It can be found in ~/Library/Preferences/ and is called: com.apple.iphoto.plist

Find where your pictures are stored, and try deleting the thumbs:
Thumb32.data
Thumb64.data
ThumbJBG.data

If that doesn't help, you may want to delete everything in that folder except the folders with your photos.

Mine "broke" once, but my symptoms were different. iPhoto would load, the pictures would appear for a split second, and then iPhoto would crash.

Turns out, one or more of the thumbs had become corrupted.

Sounds like you have a different problem.

Have you tried launching iPhoto with another user?
How about reinstalling iPhoto?

I believe you'll have to use Pacifist to get the application out of the packages on your install/software restore CD's or DVD's.
