Somewhere around the time of the iTunes 4.5 update, my Software Update on my iBook got hosed. As I recall, the iTunes 4.5 download or install got hung and I had to force-quit SU. I think it's been hosed since then, but I'm not 100% sure.
When I run it now, it launched, the progress bar went maybe 80% of the way during "checking for updates", then the app died. I got the "send report" pop up.
Same thing happens when I try to launch Safari.
I checked the console log, and it said SoftwareUpdateCheck failed "network unreachable", but I can launch iChat fine (and see status) and the AirPort status shows connectivity. It actually had a malloc failure, "Can't allocate region". I'm a software engineer, so I'm familiar with this, but I can't see how memory allocation would fail - there's plenty of disk space and RAM.
I repaired permissions, but that didn't change anything.
Anyway, anyone know what I might do to resolve this, short of a complete re-install? I've never had to troubleshoot MacOSX before, so I'm kinda at a loss.
