I, like probably many of you, keep my mail divided up into folders within mac mail so I don't get all mixed up. Eg. I have a folder for friends, work, subscription-related stuff etc etc and it all gets automatically separated out by some quick rules.

However, annoyingly, I only get a red mail icon on my dock icon if there is new mail in my DEFAULT folder, which is basically the folder from people I don't know (and spam). How can I set mac mail so that a red mail icon comes up when there is mail in my sub-folders? A sound plays, but that isn't always helpful for me as I use my computer at work a lot with the sound muted.

please help!
