I can watch Xvid with Divx and 3ivx plugins, even VLC and Mplayer, BUT I get all these blocky artifacts on the video. I know pc users that are having this problem, too.

But they can download the newst xvid plugins, I don't think there are any stand-alone xvid plugins for mac os x.

So when will the plugins / vlc / mplayer be updated with the newst xvid playback?

to me, when you say "all these blocky artifacts", it means that the video was overcompressed and then there's nothing that can be done about it.

You can get really nasty artifacts from non-conforming streams, too. There's not much you can do but shake your fist at whoever encoded it for using a bad encoder.

No, I think the video is fine. The artifacting stopped for the pc users when they installed the latest xvid codec. That's why I was wondering when vlc and mplayer would be updated.

Never mind. Thanks anyway.

Good question... VLC is on the back burner regarding development.

i've been fortunate with my downloaded movie quality. my "Hero" download was DVD quality (no kidding) at only ~696megs and Starksky and Hutch ain't too bad at 702megs (although not half as good as Hero). Even my "My Neighbor Totoro" was pretty damn good.

but yeah, it usually depends on the encoder and what encoders he/she uses.

Yeah, and that newer version probably includes a workaround for a bug in a prior version of Xvid which was used to encode the video.

The video was encoded with the newst version of Xvid, xvid 1.0 final. People who were havin greenish blocky stuff, and out of sync video/audio were told to download xvid 1.0 final, which FIXED it for the pc users.

From the site: "Upgrade your XVid codec to 1.0 or get ffdshow2004...If you have any further issues post them to our Help Forum...All current and future releases will be done in XVid 1.0"

I'm just upset because there's a standalone download for xvid for windows, not so easy for mac osx. I've tried my luck with divx, 3ivx, vlc and mplayer, no dice.

I guess I'll wait then. Thanks for your help.

Could you try the latest VLC nightly build?
http://xserve.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/m...0406150402.dmg

wonder if that fixes it. If not, then it's just not fixed properly in ffmpeg yet, since this is build with a fresh checkout of ffmpeg every single night.

It seems to work fine in VLC, I'll have to do some more testing.

Now all I need is an updated divx/3ivx plugin so I can convert these avis to mov with aviray.

Thank you.

To burn them to dvd with iDvd, that's the only way I can back them up on my dvds.
