Just wondering about what are the exact differences between the Student/Teacher edition and the Standard version of Office 2004.

The apps themselves are the same, right? So is it just the outside packaging that is different? Same discs inside?

Do the splash screens identify itself as "Office for Student/Teacher edition".

thanks.

Search...this has been asked a few times already...

Same byte for byte on the programs. The "Student/Teacher" edition allows you (3) installs however...

I understand that the programs themselves are the exact same in all editions of Office but are there any other identifiers that would indicate that one is using a Student/Teacher version as opposed to the Standard version--so things like splash screens?

No. The splash screens are pretty 'no frills' and they appear for such a short time it would be hard to see anything like that anyway .

There is also no indication in the about boxes or Finder info or anything. I think the only way it would matter is if you went to Online Registration, it might say, but I haven't done that as yet so can't say for sure.

Just curious - how do they enforce 3 installs?

(still waiting for the computer store of my university to buy)

They don't...

I hear you can't have all three installed on the same subnet.

The Student/Teacher and the Standard versions are identical. The Student/Teacher version, though, comes with 3 unique registration codes. This allows for three installs and three installs on the same subnet running at once.

WOW, I'm 0 for 2...

I hear the packaging is totally different! [need to move up my averages!]

At least for Office vX they gave you three registration codes, and the outside packaging was different. I am awaiting my *FREE* technology upgrade to 2004 (hint, hint, apple - I have spent hundreds of dollars on OSX) before I know how 2004 works.

On that note - anyone received their free upgrade to 2004??

office v.X listens and transmits on udp port 2222 a unique office 'PID', and if the same one is found on the same subnet (it could be your home, office, or uni LAN), it figures out which one to quit.

I'm not sure about office 2004, however. I own a legit student copy and do not plan on violating the terms. I'd feel safe assuming that the PID checker is in office 2004, though.

I finally got my copy today.

I've only played around with word. Feels a little nicer, but that's a relative statement.

Thanks

You'll want to get the institutional CD which doesn't have license checking. You'll need to contact MS for that. I think purchases of 5 or more are eligible for it. Otherwise, you'll have to maintain a unique serial for each machine.

I heard the only *real* big difference besides pricing, is that the student/teacher version is not upgradable. That it, when the next major release comes out, you can't pay an upgrade fee if you have the student/teacher version. You have to pay full price (or get the student/teacher again if applicable).

the background image on the disk shows it is a student/teacher edition. i have not noted any other differences, though I haven't seen office 2004 yet.
