After sitting with a friends powerbook, I noticed his Mail.app would beep when he got new mail. I think this is a pretty nifty feature, but I am unable to get it to work.

When I went into Mail.apps prefs I saw that the section for New Mail Sound had New Mail Sound selected. Also, the check box for 'Play sounds for all other mail actions' was checked, so I should have been hearing sounds for every action I did from the beginning.

I thought that becuase I have my alert volume turned all the way down in my Sound prefs I would not be able to hear the Mail.app sounds. So I turned that up and sent myself a test email. No sound played when it sent or when it showed in my inbox.

Should be working. I have an audio sample from "Bear in the Big Blue House" (the Mail Song, 'natch) that plays every time I get new mail.

Have "Bear Mail.Aiff" in User>Library>Sounds, and then selected it thru mail. Btw, you could always fire up Garage Band and create your own composition to play everytime you get mail. It's more entertaining than the plain ol' 'pling' for new mail alert.

That, or Blue's Clues has got a suitably catchy/annoying mail song that you could nab off of a dvd...
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

What machine are you using? I found that with my 12"PB the sound never or rarely worked for mail, but is 100% with my 15" PB and Dual 500
