i was using hotmail and i had 2 emails the first one, the word doc downloaded just fine.
the second one, a rtf file won't download. instead it opens up as a webpage full of junk characters.

if i drag the link to the download manager window, it downloads the hotmail login page, probably for security reasons.

any idea how to force it to download?

the first one was fine....

I haven't used hotmail, but can you ctrl-click on the link to the download and say 'Save linked file as...'?

Safari (like any browser!) is obeying the MIME type that the server is transmitting. What it means is that the Hotmail server isn't set up with a MIME type for RTF files, so the server is telling the browser that it's a text file. The browser is dutifully displaying the "text" file, since every browser knows how to display text (so it doesn't just save it, as it would do with an unknown file type).

So just control-click/right-click and choose Download Linked File As.... If that doesn't work, wait for the page of goobledygook to finish loading, then go to File->Save As... and save it that way.

thanks.

that didn't work.

but loading it as gibberish and then saving it worked fine. is there any way to fix or tell safari to save rtf files?

It's not Safari that's screwing up, it's Hotmail.

Yeah but in that funny logic, it can probably be explained to be the fault of 'hotmail.' Probably something to do with not supporting standards....

Problem is if hotmail is telling safari the file is 'text/html' or 'text/plain' then safari is correct in displaying what it is send. The internet does not work using file extensions, but MIME types.

As a fix try using some different browsers (such as Firefox) as they might have hacky workarounds to this sort of issue.

No, it won't.

Option-click is the same as choosing "Download Linked File As...". If that didn't work, option-clicking won't work.

Nope, you're wrong. Try it for yourself: just hold the option key and hover over a link. If you have the Status Bar visible, you'll see that it just downloads with no dialog. At least with the latest version of Safari

um i just tried it in hotmail. it just opened the page with a bunch of crap again.

it works elsehwere, but in hotmail, if u have a file attachment, and click the download file link while holding down the option key, its the same as not holding down the key and clicking it.
