hello
I have various QT movies that come off al Alchemy DVR card which I edit with QTPro.
I made thie error and would like to know if I can recover the original file and re=edit it, as the computer says its the original size 1.4 GB
I saved the selected part that I wanted to cut. so now, inspite of the fact that the file size has not changed on the coputer, when I open the file I get the saved part only, cannot undo the cut and am stuck.
when files are saved, why does the file size NOT change, unless I export. If the file size is unchanged from the original unaltered file, is there a way to get the other piece?
hope this is clear enough for starters.
thanks rotut

What QT version do you have and what file format comes off the Alchemy card?
If you save the movie as new self-contained file it should only include the parts you want. To retrieve the original you can try extracting the tracks and adding the video to the audio.

I have QTpro 6.5 . the files say .mov after them, they come off the alchemyDVR card compressed as Sorensen3
what Ive noted with QT after I edit the files, unless I export them into another format, if I just save them after the cuts, the file on my computer does not change in size, but them I open them the file opens with the cuts.
I do notknow how to extract tracts etc. I do have FinalCut express, but know little about it. when I open the file in that program its the edited version. even if I way 'import' the file in question.
Id like to see If I can recover the parts I want, if they exist as I know Ill make this mistake again.
any help on how to try extration would be appreciated.

Save (command-S) means to update the existing file with a reference to the new movie object. Save As, by contrast, means to create a new movie. The default option for Save As is to create a new reference movie, which is small and depends on the original file. You can choose "self contained movie" instead (inside the Save As... dialog) and get what you would expect from a normal Save. I don't think there is any way to retrieve the edited-away data that still sits in those files or to make them smaller. I know it's hard to remember, but whenever you edit source files like that, the first thing you should do is Save As so you're working with a copy.
