Several times recently I've had the following problem. When I attempt to play something on my (40 Gb) iPod through iTunes 4.6 on my desktop machine, it refuses to play. I get a lot of spinning beachball, and messages about disk errors (on the disk that must be the iPod) get logged to the console. Eventually it gives up, but then iTunes is frozen: I can't even force quit it. I actually have to do a hard shutdown of the machine.
The tracks that won't play include both ones bought from the ITMS and ones I ripped myself from CD's, so I don't think it's a protection issue. Perhaps a problem with the iPod dock and firewire cable? Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?
The problem isn't reliably reproducible: sometimes I can play stuff from the iPod and sometimes I can't.

Have you updated to the latest iPod firmware (v2.2)?

You should try restoring your iPod with the iPod updater.

Yes. There is a huge issue w/ the iSight and any other devices using firewire.
It mainly seams to effect firewire drives and iPods. If you unplug the iSight while using your iPod all the locking up will stop. Even when everything starts to lockup you can unplug the iSight to recover your machine. A perfect test is, start transferring some files or mp3s to your iPod and then open your iSight video window in iChat. All hell will come crashing down if you do.
Go check out the Apple.com support discussions and you will see what I mean.
Apple really needs to fix the problem.

Sorry, no iSight here.

Right, and trash the 20 Gb of CDs I have laboriously ripped, plus the iTunes Music Store stuff I've bought.
Really, I'm looking for some tips on what the problem might be - not suggestions on how to start over again from square 1.
