Mac OS 9.2.2
Virtual PC 5.1
312 MB RAM
11 GB HDD

I installed Virtual PC without a OS coming with it. Now, I have a Windows 98 SE CD that I want to install and use for Virtual PC. The instructions that came with Virtual PC is very confusing and doesn't help.

Long Story short, how can I install Win 98 for Virtual PC?

First, is the 98 SE cd oem or retail? OEM cds are bootable but retail/upgrade cds require a boot disk to kickstart the install. If you can't find a 98 SE boot disk on the internet I can make one in VPC and send it to you as a virtual floppy image.

It is a Retail version CD. If you can make me a boot disc, that would be awesome. If you want my e-mail, it is raderick24@sbcglobal.net. Let me know.

Here's the link to the boot disk: http://homepage.mac.com/wmiganowicz/winme.vfd

Even though it is a Windows ME boot disk it still will work fine for fdisk/format and to start the 98 install.

The confusing part of VPC CD install is this:

Create a New drive image with the specs you want.
Start that drive image, it will complain No OS Found. Close It.
NOW insert the Windows CD and start up drive image again.
It should then find the OS CD installer and start the process.

You should update to 5.0.4 also. I have it posted here:

There's also VPC Tech Notes posted worth reading over.

a retail windows 98 cd isn't bootable. It needs a boot disk to start the install from the cd.

I have a genuine Windows retail 98SE CD with original jewel case and security sticker/serial that installed into VPC without ever using a boot floppy image, it just started up like XP installs do. There has to be others out there too. Worth a try first.

Thank you for your help.

Whats sad though, after I did the boot dik stuff, and loaded in Windows 98 SE, I found out it was a Update disk and not a full loaded 98 SE Disk. Duh me.

A retail W 98 SE is bootable.

You have only to do settings for booting the CD in the PC parameters. And restart the PC.
Just follow the instructions within VPC help and getting satrted guide .
It 's easy to do, very clear.
