Well there is no spyway for Mac really so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you are worried about cookies though you sound a bit more paranoid then normal.

It's so not bad that it doesn't even qualify as a problem.

Relax. It's a mac.

You could have figured this out for yourself if you had taken the time to search before posting. This question is asked just about weekly.

At the moment, there is only one spyware program known to exist on OSX: LimeShop, which came with some versions of LimeWire.

At this point, I do not know of any spyware-scanning software, simply because there isn't enough spyware to scan. This might be a good time to start with such a program, however, when the complete database of spyware would still be small and easy to test.

so sorry to offend, but I do try to seach, but it never works for me, says too many terms or someting.

Mac Scan was mentioned in an article either in the WSJ or NYT that it was the standard for the mac. their site says new version soon.

It just so happens I'm the lead developer for a MAC software program that scans for spyware... it's like adaware for the macintorsh.
It will retail for $59.99. I'm currently taking paypal preorders.

...

(how hard could it be? I just need an applescript to look for limeshop and a fancy icon)

Any developer that capitalizes "Mac" is certainly deserving of our money.

Protects you from trojans, worms, and other network parasites.

And I'll emphasize that even though that might be true: LimeWire still sucks.

This is a great program. Heavens! -- I even paid the shareware fee!

wataru -- don't be so prickly. chris_h has clearly developed a program that scans for Media Access Control -related spyware.

LittleSnitch doesn't protect you against much, just the casual commercial malware,, which is of course still helpful. If your system is infected with or attacked with active "trojans, worms, and other network parasites", all bets are off. Currently, OS X has NO protection (I don't know, maybe NetBarrier/Virex do something, I doubt macscan does) against malware, excepting UNIX privledges (unless you run as admin, which is very common on OS X), chkrootkit, any firewalls added or IPFW turned on and set up properly (this includes Snort/IDS), and the security obscurity brings (which isn't very helpful unless coupled with real security).

As of yet, there is only the one malware program mentioned above, that crap applescript someone uploaded to gnutella, and...well, that's about it, unless you run Classic (in which case there still isn't much destructive, avoid 666/sevendust...hell, run disenfectant/Virex to check for old stuff).

To secure your copy of OS X against most future attacks, these things may help. First, update, there aren't many exploits yet, just one in OpenSSH that was fixed long ago, and that system URL thing from a month or two ago). Second, use a NAT router AND IPFW if possible, if not just use IPFW, and learn how to make a ruleset (brickwall or that other one will help, search VT or MU). Next, don't run as administrator or root, run as a user with as few privs as possible. Use only applications you trust, and use that application level firewall LittleSnitch to protect you from the moderatly malicious ones you don't know of. You may want to run some virusscan over all your old files, run www.chkrootkit.org (there's an OS X port somewhere) if you are worried about an unknown/unpublicised rootkit, maybe run Snort (GUI "Hen Wen" I believe) if you're a networking/configuration god. Last, run nmap on your machine from a remote machine, or just use shieldsup at www.grc.com (some rail against that site), it's helpful.

sorry for the essay, but this is security, someone's going to disagree with something i say, better explain as much as possible.

Well, chris_h, you have to admit that your pitch is long on chutzpah and short on details. "Buy Now!" at $60 a pop for a WIP, when you've listed no features, posted no screenshots, and never explained the need?

I wouldn't rely on ANYTHING said about limewire by Adam.

Been there, done that on windows. Until Wired broke story.

I deleted every lime crap on my machine, see this when launching my browser:
<CFURL 0x5344d0 [0xa01900e0]>{type = 15, string = file://localhost/Users/ilgaz/Library/PreferencePanes/LimeShop.prefPane/Contents/LimeShop.app, base = (null)}

I am not giving browser name but they will get a call from law department of that company soon.

Enough with your lies Adam! Circumventing a browser without user knowledge is against many laws.

There's no such thing as 100% security (how do you put a number on security, anyway?) However, these two programs are certainly of great help.

Unless you're using LimeWire p2p software, there really is no spyware for MacOS X (and even then, the LimeWire issue was delt with in recent version from what I hear).
