i know i could plug a cable from line out to line in to record sound e.g. from dvds. but is that really necessary? can i not just record it directly from an app? there is a setting in the system prefs (sound) to record from "zoomed video". but it does not do anything i can see.
i use 10.2.8 and iRecord.

can this be done?

Is this what you`re looking for: Wiretap

I don't know about irecord, but, in addition to wiretap listed above, I've used audio hijack pro to do exactly what you want to do. It's not free, though I believe there's a light version. Sorry -- no link at the moment. Check version tracker.

One word of caution about WireTap - it records all sounds that occur while it is running, so any system beeps will also be recorded - mute them first in Sys Prefs.

We're actually working on updating WireTap at the moment. We will keep the functionality that's in it now absolutely free, but if we add .mp3 and .mp4 native file format support, we'll need to charge for that capability. Licensing fees make that imperative, unfortunately.

Would it be possible to make two versions? Like a free version and a pro version.

I love the idea of WireTap [I don't really use it, but I might need to use it some day for a few minutes]. So, for me, it would be good if there is an application that is for free and can record sound. If I would use WireTap daily I wouldn't mind paying. But right now, I don't really need mp3, mp4.

Think it this way: the free version would be a good promotion/advertising for the pro version

Well, there's not really a reason to make two versions. Everything will work as it does now, but if you want to record to .mp3/.mp4, you'd have to pay for that capability. That's all.

Ugh, they're charging licensing fees? How is that possible? I thought .mp3 and .mp4 were open formats.

If you have Toast, the CD Spin Doctor also will record sound coming into your Mac. I'm using it now to convert a HUGE book on tape, then convert THAT to another file to put on my ipod.

As I understand it, this is the big deal with LAME — they managed to work around the MP3 format requirements that would subject them to licensing fees but still keep the files compatible with MP3 codecs.

I don't have Toast as I don't need it at all. So, I prefer WireTap

I've also used OSex for ripping audio off of dvd's and used mAC3dec to convert the stream to an AIFF (which I can then import into iTunes and iMovie). Works like a champ, but only rips audio (and video, I guess) off of dvd's, it won't capture anything from apps...

I've been using Audio Hijack to grab audio from my music DVDs. Works great.
