To download files from these types of applications do I need to change a setting such as firewall on my G5? Every time I try to download files they are always placed in que and never begin download..

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Carolyn

(before anyone starts discussing the use of p2p)

If your firewall is enabled, you will need to open or forward the ports responsible for each service e.g. 6346 for Limewire.

If you receive your net connection over Airport/Wifi as I do these apps don't tend to work very well anyway.

Hmmm.. I do not know how to do this..

I tried turning my firewall completely off and it is still not allowing the download..

You shouldn't expect 100% of your selected downloads to actually happen, anyway. Remember, you're getting these files from other people who may have limits placed on the bandwidth or # of files they want people taking from them at any given time. So, expect to "wait in line" a lot.

on that note: I have my Xbox connected to my router, but whenever I access it over FTP, I have to turn off my firewall.. Why is this? (I've tried with passive mode both on and off).
I can access other computers in my network just fine..

Something to do with wireless routers dropping packets combined with the huge throughput of data. Or Something

(Unless this was supposed to be a John F.Smith styled response)...

I think it has to do with being able to send as much data upstream as downstream - as I get far better 'performance' when using a direct internet connection, rather than via Airport.

I haven't noticed a difference. Most internet connections are under 3 megs and Airport can support 11 megs. Even with up and downstream going at the same time I can't see there being a difference.

Unfortunately Airport (1st generation) is 11 Mega-bits per second, not bytes I believe so what you said is not quite true.

Having said that, Airport should not make a difference to these apps, but in my experience it does.
