So, I will need to use VPC to run one application for my job. Now, if I want to run with the best performance, what hints can you give me?

I already know to make the RAM the highest, but what about the VRAM?
Should I use NTFS or FAT32 with Windows 2000?
Should I update Windows 2000 with all the windows updates, or should I just leave the default installation alone (it is Windows 2000 SP4)?

Any other hints are welcome.

Just a thought, but are you sure you want Windows 2000? Is there a faster version of Windows that will run that one application?

Well, this is advice I am also looking for. But, from what I am told, Windows 98SE and Windows 2000 run about the same with VPC and a >1 GHz G4 (although I could be wrong, someone please tell me).

Other than 95 and NT, Win2000 will run the fastest in VPC6, far, far faster than 98SE. Don't allocate more than 256MB RAM to VPC, run OSX with at least 512MB RAM to avoid paging out and using virtual memory to run VPC. Close other OSX apps when running VPC to give it all the resources available.

Run 2000 without Service Packs and updates and patches if practical, none will add speed, just slow it down. Keep drive image as small as possible, install ONLY the applications necessary that you need for VPC. Turn off all Windows OS animations, Restore, sound, and VPC features such as Dock integration.

How come I should only allocate 256 MB of RAM? Everything I have read says max it out. Also, what about the VRAM? Should I keep at default (4 MB), or make it 16?

Greater than 256MB RAM doesn't get used, bumping to 512MB won't show any worthwhile increase, and if taken from running OSX will actually be counter-productive.

Same with VRAM, VPC6 emulates a Trios S3 video card, it won't use more than 4MB VRAM except to help drive a second display.

Let VPC format your drive image following its prompts. It will use FAT32, NTFS isn't supported.

I agree for the RAM. 256 Mo for W 2000 is just what the PC needs to work fine.
I disagree for the updates. I update regularly with Windows Update my W 98 SE and it's working well because of updating it and to make maintenance each month.
You have to use Windows Update (only critical updates) and especially to install USB devices on Windows and to improve Windows.
