Hullo all, a few days ago I noticed that my hard drive space was slowly disappearing at the rate of maybe ten megs a minute. I thought I was imagining things until I ran 'Where is my disk space?' and it found a file that was 8 gigs big. I forget the exact name of the file (sorry...) but I seem to remember it relating to xfactor (some kind of temporary file, maybe?). Anyway, I proceeded to move it to the trash, but of course the trash wouldn't empty so I ran Force Empty Trash. The trash seemed to be empty but the disk space was still missing and Where is my disk space? would no longer find this 8 gig file. Disk space left eventually hit zero at which point I had a kernel panic and had to reboot...only to find that there was now 12.5 gigs left. Hmm. What's most odd is that while all this was happening I wasn't online at all (I'm in the process of moving and don't have internet yet) and thus not running xfactor or anything. Everything seems to be back to normal but I of course now get paranoid when I see even a teeny bit of disk space going away.

If anyone has any insight at all, it'd be appreciated.

Well, my guess is that although you deleted the directory entry for this file (by emptying the trash), it was still being added to until you rebooted. At that point the disk space was reclaimed.

If you have the problem again, try quitting xfactor and see if that works. Also, there seems to be a bug in Xfactor that is being worked on...
