Had a disk fail... shortly after upgrading to Panther.
I have a new disk, reinstalled Panther, and a am now trying to restore my home directory from a backup made via 'sudo ditto -rsrcFork -V home Backup/home'. That Backup, which was made with Jaguar's ditto, shows the proper owner (user), though not the right group.

I am restoring via the reverse command: 'sudo ditto -rsrcFork -V Backup/home home'. The resultant directory shows owner 'root' and group 'unknown'. What's up with that?!?!?

Am I doing something wrong? Or is Panther's 'ditto' broken? And if broken, how broken is it?

I don't think it's broken as Carbon Copy Cloner uses this just fine in Panther...

Have you double checked that all of the owner and group settings are correct?

Make sure you're not ignoring privileges on your backup volume.
