I logged on to iChat and all my buddies appeared correctly and everything...
But when I selected a screenname and chose to text message them, a window appeared that said:

iChat Internal Error!
NSInternalInconsistencyException:
Chat is not in compose mode anymore

It had two buttons I could select, "Quit" (which would quit iChat) or "Continue" (which would make the window disappear, but the same thing would happen if I tried to text message someone again).

I have found at least 2 threads on these forums with people having the same problem, but no one had been able to answer. Hopefully this time, someone knows what to do. Thanks!

I haven't experienced it, but I have heard of it before. I just Googled it, and came up with what might be a possible solution;
http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-22100

I had CocoAspell items in my user folder, but had not reinstalled Aspell to my system. Deleting everything related to Aspell in my User Library cured the problem for me.

The program returns the error message after hitting the space bar because it is spell-checking as you type. An even quicker fix is to go into the Edit>Spelling menu item and unselect "Check Spelling As You Type."
(A write-up exists here, too - http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac9.../05/000175.php )

I hope that's of some help. ^^;;;

Thanks for those links. Unfortunately, I did a search for CocoAspell on my computer and nothing came up. Even worse, the error message in those links are:

iChat Internal Error!
NSInternalInconsistencyException:
Invalid parameter not satisfying: (index >= 0) && (index < (_itemArray ? CFArrayGetCount(_itemArray)

where as the error message I am getting is a little different:

iChat Internal Error!
NSInternalInconsistencyException:
Chat is not in compose mode anymore

Perhaps this is a different problem? Any more help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've just done another search, and I'm afraid I can't seem to find anything about how to fix that error - only a couple of mentions of it, without any fixes. X_X;; Sorry.

Forte, thanks for trying. Anyone else know what's going on? I hope I don't have to wait to see if installing Tiger in 2005 will fix this.

Someone on another forum said that deleting iCAR.bundle will fix the problem. Before I do that, I just wanted to check here if you think that makes sense...? Will deleting iCAR.bundle make iCAR essentially dead, or will I still be able to use it in the future? Thanks!

(To help others who might be experiencing the same type of problem, threads on other forums say that if you are getting the other error message, enabling Helvetica font should fix the problem. Keep in mind this is different from the one I am getting that ends in "...not in compose mode anymore").
