Hi,

I need to access SMB shares every day at work, which I use most of the time. The OS X client is too slow/quirky/etc for me to use at work. Is there any alternative that is easy to install in 10.3.4 that is a lot better then the OS X client? Does Samba have a client that can mount SMB shares in OS X? With any solution, I am hoping for a nice GUI so I can mount them easily each time.

Thanks for your help!

The Mac OS X SMB client is Samba.

Hmm, is there any third party sw that implements it better? The same thing happens with FTP - Apple has a fast, small unix FTP client to work with, and yet, their "hooks" to the GUI makes it a complete mess and unusable solution (at least for me.) I have seen FTP clients that can do what Apple tried, but does it well (doesn't Windows do it, too? If so, I have the funny feeling it's better :-(

Thanks!

Not to my knowledge, but for it to be any faster, you'll want it to be a pure client and not use either vfs or the Finder.

Think Transmit, but with smb instead of ftp/scp.

Oooh...I think I'll go file a feature request....

Hmm, well is there any FTP client that can mount the volumes in the FInder and have fast access to it, and update live?

Thanks!

Your problem is the Finder and perhaps the vfs layer as well.

What do you mean by "slow"? I use SMB here and it's just as fast as AFP. So what's slow -- transfer, directory listing, or initial connection time?

If it's the latter, then you have a DNS issue, it's not the Samba client.
