I'm getting my first iPod. My music collection (about 15 Gigabytes) resides on an iMac DV/SE running OS 9.1 and whatever version of iTunes is supported at that level.

Can I fill / run the iPod from the iMac using OS9?

I have an eMac running OS 10.2.?. Should I transfer my song collection to this for better operation with the iPod? If so ... what is the best way to transfer my song collection from the OS 9 mac to the OSX mac? BTW I have an airport wireless router.

(1) I don't know any reason the new iPods should not work with OS 9 - as long as you've got an up-to-date version of iTunes

(2) The best way to transfer such a large amount of data is NOT over Airport, but by making one of the macs act as a firewire drive.

To do this - put the computers in close proximity (close enough to run a firewire cable between the two of them). Turn off one of them (probably best to do this with the iMac), turn it back on while holding down the "T" key (T stands for Target disk mode). If everything works as expected, you'll get a blue screen with a yellow firewire symbol flashing around on it. Connect the iMac to the eMac via firewire, and the iMac should appear as another hard drive on the eMac. Then just drag and drop the music over - this will be MUCH faster over firewire than it would have been via airport

I don't know if the syncing software works, because I'm not sure what the last version of iTunes for OS9 supports.

At the very least, however, you should be able to mount it as a drive, in which case there's other software that may be able to help you.

I'm pretty sure that it states right on Apple's website that you need 10.1.5 at a minimum, and 10.3 is recommended. When I bought my 3G iPod in February, I also ordered Panther at the same time and upgraded from 9, because the 3G iPod needed iTunes 4.x I believe.

Although as Millennium said, it will probably mount as a hard drive on 9.

I'm pretty sure the only iPods that work with OS 9 are those without USB2, i.e. 1G iPods. So your best bet is to copy your files over to your OS X Mac, in addition AAC files are not supported by iTunes or QT under OS 9 so those aren't even playable.
The best and fastest way to transfer files between your two computers is firewire target disk mode, plug a firewire cable between the two, restart the OS 9 mac while holding down the T key and it will appear on the other mac as an external HD. Copying files is then just a matter of drag and dropping the files. This is significantly faster than using Ethernet/Airport etc. Alternatively, copy all the music files onto the iPods HD (the part that appears on the desktop - not via iTunes) and then copy them off onto your other computer.

Hope that helps.
