How hard would it be to write an app that just pulls the contents of a folder and has a universal menu in the menu bar that gives the contents? I'd love to have a pulldown that I use for applications, folders, docs.. I guess I could just put it in the doc, but it would be nice to have up there.

Does it have to have the word "Start" written on it?

No, seriously, even though it wouldn't be very hard to write, I don't see why anyone would want to write it since it actually does less than putting a folder in the Dock would.

Butler could do this easily as well as allow you to name it Start :-)

It's sounds like you want something like Butler, but i'll suggest Quicksilver. It is different, but it will change the way you interact with your mac.

I found moofmenu ( haven't installed it yet ), it looks like what I was thinking about. I installed both butler and f10 as well.

I think I like butler more than f10, although it looks like its way more than I need.
