My issue is described in another post in this forum, which dates back to 2002. Either Word 2004 behaves like this.

Do you mean Word 2004 also does this?
There are plenty of other apps that can print envelopes for you, and there are AppleScripts that can take your Address Book info and turn that into an envelope.

Can you name an example? I'm pretty inflexible on the data source, though: an Excel spreadsheet.

I'm sorry, but the examples I can name would only work from the Mac OS Address book - may I ask why you have names/addresses in a spreadsheet?

This one may work, but first you need to export the spreadsheet contents as a tab delimitated text file if that's possible.

well if the info's in an excel spreadsheet, it's pretty easy to export it to a tab-delimited list, and if it's that, any number of applications can import that into vCard or whatever other format you're looking for, and from vCard, you can put in Address Book where you can print mailing labels (easy as they come in 8.5x11 inch sheets), or you can write/use/buy applescripts and other utilities that will automatically create envelopes for you.
At any rate, I'm not sure I understand what your current problem is - (all this cross referencing is confusing) - but I'll bet you're just missing something. I was able to create and print onto odd size envelopes using Word X and now Word 2004, and even save new margins to .rtf to get around TextEdit's 1 inch margin limitations....
