In a small office, with about less than 10 email accounts we want to upgrade our mailserver in our next shopping expedition.

The company was using quickmail server, since before I arrived, on a OS9 mac. Of course Quickmail Pro seems to have disappeared off the radar screens. Any suggestions for a simple and non-$400 small office mail server? We are also buying our first PC for compatibility testing our e-work, and its a machine that will go largely unused. Should I consider any solutions that will run off the PC and will serve the mac network happily? Looking forward to knowledge gems from all.

Will this be on an OS X Mac?

If you get OS X Server, the built-in mail server (based on Cyrus and Postfix) is more than capable enough for 10 email accounts.

Other (good) alternatives include Kerio (probably first choice) and Stalker's Communigate Pro. Both of these cost some money (I don't think Kerio is that expensive), and can run on any version of OS X -- "regular" or "server."

And NO, don't run a mail server on a PC. The Mac will be more secure, and all of these mail servers can serve mail to both Macs and PCs (either POP or IMAP) without issue. Kerio can even do full integrated calendaring between PCs and Macs (similiar to what Microsoft Exchange does with Outlook, actually identical in functionality, except it's cross platform where Exchange is not).

If you don't want to use the free built-in OSX Mail server (PostFix + Cyrus), you can use Eudora Internet Mail Server (EIMS), but it IS $400. Still, it's very nice and works quite well.
