Does anyone know how to keep Safari 1.2 from automatically downloading files? I want it to ask me if I want the file and where to put it, each time I download. Whenever I click a downloadable link, the file is downloaded immediately to the Desktop, without questions. Anyone have any hints?

In Preferences>General>Save Downloaded Files To:

you can select a different default destination to that already chosen.

Untick the Open "safe" files after downloading option if you don't want things to e.g. unstuff automatically.

If you want to choose a specific file to a specific location, control click the link and select Download Linked File As... option
