In all honesty. I don't think there are any changes you should try to the network settings in OS X to maximize network speeds. The networking in OS X is pretty solid out of the box. I believe the utilities that claim to maximize speed are placebos.

TinkerTool System also lets you tweak the network settings, as well as lots of other handy little things...a nice package to have around.

There's a package called Broadband Optimizer that tweaks network settings that can improve your download/upload speeds. You can get it from versiontracker.com. In my semi-scientific tests it does seem to improve download rates, but YMMV.

you can write this:

'sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendspace=65536' <- maybe increase it to 98304 or something. It's hard to tell if it works but sometimes it does seems to load sites faster. But I never had any luck with the Broadband Optimizer program. Although it does the sam thing but also tampers with other things but unsure what it is. But have a look at the readme.

I don't know if "sudo" is necessary btw.

edit. 'sudo' seems to be necessary. I should have known and tried it sooner since i've written that command many times

BBO puts a script in /Library/StartupItems to automate the command you identified below, along with a few others.

It seems to be faster but this may well be the placebo effect.

This page - http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7136 - has a link to useful little tweaking utility called 'RMAC' (which can edit TCP Recieve Space, MTU, and so on). It seems to do it's job pretty well.
