I was pretty happy when Keynote, Apple's answer to PowerPoint, was released. It received a couple of small updates, then.... nothing.
Meanwhile, PowerPoint 2004 has gained access to some of the Quartz graphics features that were once exclusive to Keynote. While PP 2004 still suffers from a less-than user-friendly Microsoft interface, its feature set still kills Keynote in many ways.
Apple offers to pre-install it on any Mac you order from the online Apple Store, so they're still making an effort to sell as many copies as they can, but I've not heard even a rumor of any updates to Keynote.
Does anyone know if Keynote is still under active development?

I would imagine it has suffered the same fate as AppleWorks, in that it has no dedicated team working on it. Thus unless anyone finds bugs in it, there won't be any updates

Hopefully it will make use of Tiger's core video for transitions by the time it's out next year. Having the water-droplet thing transitioning your slides would be hella cool.

I think it will be a poster child for CoreGraphics and CoreVideo. Keynote 2 will cost the same and require Tiger.

I agree. Keynote won't have been dropped, but it will be updated (along with possibly Appleworks?) for Tiger. I think it needs a bit more technical wizardry to make an impression on the powerpoint market, like it had when it first came out (compared to PPT). Therefore, with Tiger's gubbins it should be an interesting development frankly.

I hope they don't kill Keynote, I really prefer it over PowerPoint, on mac and pc. I haven't used PPT 2004 yet but seeing as that its a Microsoft UI, it 'prolly won't be any fun. On a side note I would love to see a re-written version of AppleWorks thats on-par or better than Keynote.

Linking prospects for upgrades of Keynote to upgrades of AppleWorks does not leave me optimistic about KN.

I'd be very sorry to see keynote abandoned as it really does offer some nice presentation capabilities. I never thought v1 was better than powerpoint (powerpoint really had some features designed for a formal presentation that KN just lacked) but it still has some great potential.

Maybe MS is brandishing its fist at Apple. And Apple is chicken.

Hmm...thought they were theme designs. But I guess they're just presentations.

I don't think keynote will be updated until there's a real reason to update it. Being a stand alone application, there's not too much reason to update it. Hopefully when Keynote 2.0 is relased, it will come as part of an office suite with a word processor, spreadsheet program, and database program. An Entourage program should not be need if Apple combines Address book, iCal, and mail into a single program.
Speaking of programs that need a refresh, AppleWorks 7 is needed badly. It was a good entry level suite back in the day, but it's realy lagging behind MS Works these days.

I am assuming we will see a V2.0 when we hit tiger, with CoreVideo and CoreImage stuff integrated.

I found this when I was looking for another Visual Quickstart Guide. Hester, Nolan Appleworks X for MAC OS X Visual QuickStart Guide. Published: 2004
Publisher: Pearson Professional Education
ISBN: 0321246640
http://www.bokkilden.no/ProductDetai...oryName=BIC_US
Could this indicate that a new version of Appleworks are on it's way?
Regards,
Kristian

Now this looks like a very good thing... Appleworks going toe to toe with Office. Now I would pay to see that. Frankly as long as it doesn't lag, doesn't crash every 5 mins, and is vaguely compatible - JACKPOT!
