Unless the great and powerful oz has another place for this...

I've noted that when I use Safari and occaisionally in Mail.app I get distortions in the page or message list (in Mail) when I scroll through the content. (so I'm assuming it is some sort of Quartz thing)

I have a PB 1GHZ with 512MB RAM. I use Mozilla Firefod most of the time, but when I decide to try out Safari...I'm annoyed by this problem (and the lack of some other features, but that's another post).

I've attached a screen grab of an example. It seems like it's always in the same general area of the screen too...which is a little weird. I'd say the center of the distubance is roughly 1.5-2 inches above my dock (on the bottom), and maybe 3-4 inches from the left of the screen...and perhaps 3 inches across. See the attached TIFF for the example.

Has anyone else seen this??

Yep; however, it hasn't been very common in Safari for me...even less in Mail.app...

any ideas on a fix?? I see in in nearly every browsing session in Safari. Perhaps more RAM? Although 512 would seem sufficient. Does the Video card in the PB share system memory at all? I'm just grasping at straws...

I also get this, on a 1.25GHz 15" AlBook with Radeon 9600. It happens pretty rarely though, maybe once a week.

I reported a bug about it to Apple. You can do the same.

for the purpose of discussion, tooki says:
The fact that you can use Firefox points away from an OS-level problem. If it were OS-level, display would be messed up in all apps.

It's possible that WebCore (the HTML rendering engine used by Safari and Mail) is corrupted somehow, though unlikely.
and
I don't believe WebCore is used for the list.
WebCore is a "foundation". It's not part of the OS, it is a library of shared code that applications can use.

I don't necessarily agree that the behavior not showing up in Firefox indicates the issue is not related to the OS. I think that it has something to do with some under lying service layer for rendering that the built-in applications use. Perhaps it's a Cocao thing? Would that cover Mail.app and Safari?

just tested in OmniWeb (just downloaded latest version) and I see the same thing there. It usually shows up when scrolling with the trackpad (using sidetrack) or with the mouse wheel.

I also get this. Very infrequently in Safari, but almost all the time in OmniWeb. It's not scroll wheel related either, because I only use the trackpad on my laptop.

Since I'm a fairly new Mac user I didn't know if there was somewhere recommended to go for answers on the topic. Does anyone know of somewhere I could get some answers about this?

I have the same problem. Powerbook 12" 1,33 Ghz. I am using Sidetrack too. Maybe this is to blame for the problem? It seems that the distortion only appears when scrolling. I had a 700 Mhz Ibook before and had the same problem there. But it is definitly a panther thing. Never had it in jaguar.

FYI, I have not seen this behavior since the 10.3.5 upgrade - which, as far as I can remember, did include something about some nvidia graphics drivers....in any case, I haven't seen it since.

Hey, cool, you're right! That problem was really irritating, but after 10.3.5, it stopped.
