I am experiencing pops, scratches and static when playing music files in iTunes 4.6.

It started with just a handful of MP3 files that my wife ripped on her Key Lime iBook using iTunes 2. We copied the files to my PowerMac G4 (OS X 10.3.4 and iTunes 4.6) and then added the files to the iTunes library.

The first files affected were classic music files.

I thought that perhaps her iBook just did not do a good job of ripping the CD. However, the pops/scratches/static phenomenon is spreading to other music files. Nearly all of her classic music files now have the problem. But pop, rock and other music files I ripped on the G4 are now having problems. It is affecting both recent rips, files from 2-3 years ago, and even a few AAC files downloaded from the iTunes music store.

I have tried playing back the files with SoundCheck and Enhancer on, off and various combinations thereof. No such luck.

Ideas?

Do you use the equalizer?

If so, try turning down the gain (pre-amp). Boosting the EQ may be causing the audio to clip, so you might have to lower the total gain to compensate.

(Also, stay away from the Sound "Enhancer". It doesn't.)

I tried turning off the EQ and it did not help. I think it is not "clipping" that I have, I think I may have damaged files. Unless iTunes is really mucked up.
