I'm not sure if I understand the question.
Do you mean dvix? A variant of mpeg-4?
If that's the case then I don't understand the "burn" part.

Yes dvix I think. Divx or dvix same thing right? Like toast itunes burning a cd or dvd.
Its for a freind. I think the person has some movies in that format and wants to burn them?

To be played in a (hardware) DivX player or just on computer? If it's on a HW DivX player you'll probably need to burn it as an ISO9660 CD, remove any weird characters from the filename if it's for a HW player.. You can do it with Toast, I'm not sure what format Disc Burner makes them..

And it is called DivX (as seen on the DivX website), the other strange capitalisations are just mis-spellings/confusion caused by Xvid, however that's supposed to be capitalised.

DivX is a compression codec and as such can be wrapped using Quicktime to produce a .mov file or Windows Media to produce a .avi (as well as others). .avi does not mean divx and neither does divx mean .avi.

I think the 3ivx divX plugins are better, the encoder is free and works as a plugin for Quicktime Pro.

If you're wanting to rip a DVD then you'll need OSex and Diva to rip and encode the video + 3ivx plugins. If, however, all you want to do is burn movies in divx format to CD then just burn a Mac/PC hybrid CD using toast.

Correct when you're talking video compression, but the DivX format is actually DivX video and MP3/some other audio format in an avi container. When you export to the DivX format with the DivX component from Quicktime Pro it gives encodes into an avi file. Hardware DivX players also need it to be in an avi container.

3ivx is not DivX, even though they're both MPEG-4 variants. The encoder isn't "free", but they do offer a fully functional download for testing purposes.

You can get 3ivx video into an avi file, change the fourcc and have a HW player recognize it as a DivX file (if it's MP3 audio), but it requires some work with ffmpeg/mencoder (on a Mac).
