Here is an organazational question
I have files that are aiff's that I bring into iTunes and Burn on CD,
Once I do this I want to then convert them to MP3's and load them onto iPod
So I do this,
But
When I convert songs to Mp3's that reside in a playlist
can I then drag those same songs from that play list to my iPod and be sure they are the Mp3's instead of the original Aiff's?

Sorry if this is obvious or unclear, I been up all night,

J

If you have doubts when transferring the file, look at the "Kind" column : it should say "MP3 file" or "AIFF file", depending on what it is.

I just finished doing this, as a matter of fact, so I could put an audiobook converted from tape onto my ipod.

Usually, when you do the conversion, the original is the first one listed on your playlist. (At least, it was for me.) So I deleted the top one. Then, to make sure I hadn't done the wrong thing, I did a search on the name to find the different files' locations. That, of course, can also tell you the kind so you can make sure you have the right one in your itunes folder and the "wrong" one elsewhere.

In my case, the aiff files were about 430 MB, and the mp3 files were a tenth that size. So trimming them down was might important, because the book is really, really long.

Quick tip: When you have a song selected in a playlist, Command+i will open the info window, which shows the kind and path to the file in the "Summary" tab. Also, command+r will "reveal" the file in the finder, if you want to see the original.

Just FYI: If you want to keep an uncompressed version for storage purposes, I suggest you convert it to Apple Lossless. As the name implies, it's lossless, so you don't lose any quality, but the file size will be about 40% smaller. And you can always convert it back to AIFF if you want.

Why convert to MP3? Why not convert to AAC?
