Everything seems to work fine, but when clicking on "send & receive mail" in Entourage, I get the message:

Error
Mail could not be sent using the account "..."

Explanation
Syntax error - badly formatted address

Error: 5501

How can I get rid of this error message from always popping up when I want to check my mail?

This happens on all messages? Or just some?

Does your e-mail address have any "extra" characters accidentally typed in under Entourage's "Account Setup" information?

This happens every time that I click on the "Send & Receive" button. I looked at my account information but there didn't appear to be any extra characters, not even blank spaces at the end.

Entourage is famous for giving cryptic and even incorrect error messages in response to any network problem. In this case, it could simply mean that your SMTP server is down.
I do not like those green links and spam.

A lot of ISP's are blocking SMTP Servers using Port 25. cox.net does it, and I am sure there are others. In an ill fated attempt to stop spam, they stop you from using thrid party SMTP servers to send emails through there network. It sucks, it is unfair, but it is probably burried somewhere in your contract. I was using cox for four years with no problems, and then all of a sudden...BOOM...no more smtp with .mac or yahoo. the only way around it that I have found is to use there smtp server for outbound mail.

I check my email several times throughout the day 7 days a week, and I always get this message, so it seems unlikely that the SMTP server is down.

I can actually send mail, however. Everything works fine, but I just get this annoying message.

Try re-building your Entourage database by holding down option as you launch Entourage...

I did both a Typical and an Advanced Rebuild, but the message still pops up every time I click on "Send and Receive." About 3 weeks ago, I had to erase my hard drive and re-install everything, and that didn't work either. Thanks anyway, for the rebuild info as I'd never done it before.

I have two email addresses. In Entourage I can send and receive in address "A", but can only receive in address "B". When I attempt to send from address "B" I get an error message that says there's an authentication problem with password/i.d./server settings and the re-enter password window appears.

I also use Mail 1.3.8 and do not have this problem at all with my two addresses here.

I set up the account info in entourage for email address "B" exactly the same as it is in Mail. I called my webmaster for help with the settings, the password and he was unable to make it work, claiming that the problem was with Entourage or my DSL co. which is Verizon. He said that sometimes Verizon blocks mail when it doesn't recognize the server (sorry if I'm getting the language mixed up). I don't think he's right about it being Verizon, otherwise I'd be having this problem in Mail, right?

So to recap, and hopefully someone can help:

My DSL service is with Verizon.

I have an earthlink account and email address so I have it set in my outgoing mail server as smtpauth.earthlink.net. This works fine in Mail for both my earthlink address and my address "B". Address B is a work address xxxxxx@xxxxxxx.org

In Entourage the outgoing mail server is also: smtpauth.earthlink.net and my earthlink address sends and receives, but my other address (the one I use for work, address "B) will only receive. It will not send.

I don't see how Verizon is the problem because ieverything works fine in Mail. (I occasionally get that annoying window that asks for the password to be entered)

Sorry this is long. Hopefully it makes sense. I'd like to organize my messages for work in Entourage and use it with Project Manager--that's why I'm trying to solve this. After all, I paid for the whole Office 2004 package--it would be nice to get full benefit for it.

thanks in advance,

clarat
