DiskWarrior only does one thing but it does it the best IMO rebuild a new disk directory.
TechTool is a multi dimensional troubleshooting and repair utility.

i've used diskwarrior, it "saved" a firewire drive for me.

but how do you decide which one to run? ie, what sort of problem(s) lead you to use a specific utility...

(or is there a place for me to research this...?)

for diskwarrior, probably the best place to get all the details is right at alsoft's Diskwarrior page - between that overview page and the next one (details) it should be pretty clear as to what Diskwarrior does and when to use it.
