I'm trying to use remote desktop to access my iMac from my powerbook. Both are running 10.3.4 and are connected to an airport network at home. The problem is that I can't seem to be able to either control or observe the iMac from the powerBook. I can share a screen and do other minor tasks, but not those two features.
It works the other way around though. From my iMac I can control, observe and use all remote desktop features on the powerBook.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening? (By the way, I'm running the same version of remote desktop on each machine).

Is everything the same under the ARD "Access Privileges" option in System Preferences > Sharing for both machines?

Dumb question: did you definitely install the server software (I forget whether ARD calls it 'client' or 'server' -- the software running on the remote machine) on the iMac? I remember the ARD installer having two pieces...

10.3 has the "client" part of it built into the OS though...should be installed already by default...

on the iMac In firewall tab of the sharing prefernces click on New... and in the portname dropdown select VNCport. This is what allows you to control/observe
the access priveledges button is in the Services tab of The Sharing prefs. You have to click on (doesn't matter if box is checked or not) the words Apple Remote Desktop and Access Privledges button will appear in botton right of window. Make sure everything is checked.
my 10.3 came with ARD client 1.2 not 2. You have to update the client software machine to 2 with Full version From the admin machine (at least I did)
You may have VNC port open for some reason on the Powerbook or the firewall is just off which is why iMac can control it. Or all boxes simply arent checked on imac
Also I dont think you are able to observe or control another machine with the full version currently active on it.

I'm running ARD 2 on both. I checked the access privileges and they're both the same. I forgot to check the firewall thing though, I'll try that tonight.
Thanks for the help.

So not to start a new thread for no reason, to piggy back on the access problems, here is a q I have regarding it...
We are investigating network/admin and remote login apps.. I have a q about RD2.. from the demo in store we saw you could have any RD2 client on the host network available as remote VNC controllable, (providing it was port forwarded etc).. is this as secure as if you were using native RD2 from the remote computer (i.e. being able to log into work pooter thru VNC) or would you need to open up a ssh tunnel for the VNC client? I am guessing that using RD2 to RD2 is all encrypted for security purposes? TIA
