is there any software package that will switch the location of the dock & top menubar to the shared display? visa versa?

System prefs -> monitors -> arrangement (I think).

Should have two (or more) boxes, one for each display and a bar at the top of one. That bar is the menu bar and you can drag it from one box to the other. The dock will follow. You can also set where the screens join from here.
