Well, it seems I took poor care of a number of important disks and could use a technique for recovering info from scratched disks?
I can access most of the files, but usually end up losing one or two items.
Any ideas?

Did you try one of those low cost cd/dvd surface repair kits? Video game stores (and I'd assume computer stores) sell 'em. No clue how well or even if they work, but s'posedly they fill in surface scratches on the media. I've been toying with pick one up myself, because my 3 year old daughter is hell on her games for the computer.

My parents had a great media policy when I was a kid:
Kids only get copies. When those are worn/broken, they get another copy made.

In the past I have removed scratches with just a damp cloth and some midly abrasive cleaner. This has worked OK.

Thanks for the input. I'll checck out the repair kits, I wasn't aware they existed. If that fails I'll go to town with the cleanser.
Any recomendations on the cleanser? Soft n Scrub? Comet?

Upside of the using originals policy is: By the time the game is unplayable, my wife and I are so amazingly sick of playing the game anyways, and we get to use the, "No, that game is broke" excuse to avoid playing Jump start preschool for the millionth time.
Unfortunately, this has met with limited success. One can only lsiten to an unconsolable 3 year old crying for the doggie game (J S preschool) for so long before your heart breaks. Yes, we are on our second copy (Hey, it was updated... flimsy excuse, I know). We have comprimised by only letting her remove the game from the jewel box...
Now if only Barbie of Swan Lake would die...

You can actually use peanut butter (no joke). Rub a thin film of it onto the disk with a coffee filter, then use a couple more clean filters to clean it off as much as possible. I've actually used this technique successfully on a few scratched audio CDs and it's worked pretty well. Just skip the jelly, OK?
You can also clean with dish soap and water.
