I am trying out Mail after getting a new mac and going from Earthlink to Comcast. I used Netscape to acess two Earthlink accounts before. Now I am accessing the two Earthlink accounts AND two Comcast accounts via Comcast HSI. I will dump Earthlink soon.
Questions:
1. I like being able to view all my mail (from four addresses) in the main InBox, as well as viewing the individual boxes with the "flippy triangle" in the drawer. BUT is there a cool way to have the different messages show up in different colors so I can tell at a glance which address they were sent to? Like having a label or flag or something.
2. I can receive mail from all accounts fine, but I cannot get it to send mail "from" my older Earthlink addresses. I am online via Comcast service-so is that the problem? The smtp outgoing settings looks right for Earthlink, and I can reply to a message sent to my Earthlink accout, but on ly if i tell it to send the reply from my Comcast account.
3. I am enjoying the Junk Mail feature. I had it just color code the junk in my inbox and then toggled to having it move it to the Junk mailbox instead. Now I can't seem to get it to go back to just marking them brown in the inbox. Is that the "learning" phase?
Thanks

For (1) I think you can write an Applescript to do this. I don't think there is a preference for doing it automatically. You could possibly modify the one over at OSXHints.

to (1):
you can set up a rule saying that if the "To:" field contains "my_alternate_address@my_mailservice.net", Mail should change the e-mail's color to hot pink, and it will. Newly received mail only though, AFAICT.

Not if after setting up the rule you select all your messages in your inbox and go Messages -> apply rules to all
This way new/altered rules get applied to all existing mail messages.

Most ISPs (well all AFAIK) do not allow SMTP relaying, so basically you can't use their SMTP server unless your are logged in their system for you internet - this is to prevent other people using their mail servers to send out SPAM.
What you can do however is in the setup for each email account just change the SMTP server to your COMCAST one rather than the Earthlink one, this way when you reply using an Earthlink email address it will use the Comcast SMTP server rather than the Earthlink one - if you get what I mean.
3. I am enjoying the Junk Mail feature. I had it just color code the junk in my inbox and then toggled to having it move it to the Junk mailbox instead. Now I can't seem to get it to go back to just marking them brown in the inbox. Is that the "learning" phase?
This is a preference setting, go to the Mail menu and select preferences, then select the Junk tab. Then click on the leave in the inbox option.
Hope that helps.

You can use this smtp server as well:
smtpauth.earthlink.net
In the server settings, you have to tell Mail to use Password authentication, and put in your earthlink account name (including @earthlink.net) and password.
Also, instead of dumping earthlink, you might consider using earthlink broadband. That way you can continue using their dialup numbers as part of your highspeed subscription (if you're out of town and using an powerbook...).

I got Comcast, because I also got Digital cable, plus I don't think Earthlink high speed is available in our area-Comcast only just became available. But would love to keep a dialup for travel.

If you want to go to earthlink high speed, give them a call. In my area, earthlink just uses the comcast lines. It is similar to switching long-distance carriers.

Thanks. I was able to make the outgoing for Earthlink the same as the Comcast settings.
Earthlink vs. Comcast? I am using Comcast Digital cable, getting a discount for being a customer, but should look into Earthlink high speed to see if in the end it is cheaper or better. I do not have an idea is either is more respected or better??
