I've been putting together a montage of photos for a presentation using iMovie and the Key Burns effect but every time I output to Quicktime I don't get smooth movement in the videos. The Key Burns effect is basically jerky. I'm doing this on a stock 17" Powerbook Rev A. Is it to do with the slower hard disk or is output usually jerky with photos that run for 7-10 secs each?

What are your export settings - it could be that it is cutting the number of frames exported to the QT format (to reduce the file size). When you go to export check the options for Quicktime to see what you are getting and alter as necessary.

Standard Quicktime CDROM quality. The problem is occuring when one increased the length of time for each photo on the timeline. The longer it is, say 10 secs, the less adept iMovie is at creating smooth motion. I'm getting a bad bug too. When I try to adjust the length of time for some photos manually to say 4:00 secs and press update, iMovie will rerender the clip but then revert back to whatever the length was. It's pretty annoying. So then I have to use the turtle n' hare slider at the bottom which doesn't allow you very good control.

Don't edit the clip once in the timeline. Ala the 'Tortoise and Hare' slider. I found this to be my problem. It is annoying. I think if you reset the time in the upper photo preview area and use the update button it should work. YMMV.
Or re-import the pic altogether from the photo preview pane. I have had to do this as well.
I think that is the best remedy. And as I said, I find it annoying as well. If you are going to be doing this type of thing on a regular basis, look into Final Cut Express. Far superior.
If not, well, try the above. I was using iMovie 4.0.1. It cost me a lot of extra time, but I was able to end up with a smooth effect.

It's Ken Burns. As in, the famous documentarian.

I'm just annoyed now because when I click update the time doesn't change. It rerenders then reverts to how it was. Bug.
