If you use the optical output [g5] to bring out the audio from a DVD of your powermac .....

does your receiver control the audio recording type and play it accordingly? (DTS 5.1 or Dolby Digital 5.1)

or

does DVD player in OS X have to be capable of decoding those audio streams first, before the receiver?

Thanks for any help

DVD Player only supports Dolby Digital, but the data it reads off the disc is simply passed to the optical out for decoding by the AV receiver attached to your optical ports.

If DVD player only pass the audio to your A/V Receiver ..... how come it "only supports Dolby Digital" ?

Does that mean DTS movies won't play?

I'm not sure how/why it wouldn't support other audio formats if all it does is pass the audio on ... ?

thanks for the helP!

Actually, it looks like Apple have changed this since I last checked it (which was a while ago, back in 10.2).

Search for "DTS" in the help for DVD Player and you'll see the following information:

1. Connect your audio device to your computer.
2. If you are playing a DVD movie that provides DTS output and your audio device supports DTS, you can select it in the DVD disc menu.
3. Choose DVD Player > Preferences, and then click Disc Setup.
4. Choose the Digital Out item from the "Audio output" pop-up menu that includes the name of the digital audio device you want to use.
5. Click Play to start playing your movie.
