I did a Software Update this morning and had 5 things to install:

iPod updater
iSync 1.5
Java 1.4.2
Mac OS X 10.3.5
Security Update 2004-08-09

I kicked it off and left the house. That was at least two hours ago. I got back and everything has a green check mark by it except the OS X update. The progress bar is about 80% done and it says:

Software Update: Installing (Locating the software to update...)

It appears to be stuck. What do I do?? Force Quit it?? I'm afraid it might leave the install in a bad state. Is there a more graceful way to stop it? The "Stop" button is not active.

If it's really stuck, you'll just have to force quit and hope for the best. Do you know which piece of software it got stuck on? You could always manually reinstall it; most of the items in Software Update eventually become available as a regular download from Apple's website.

It's stuck on OS X 10.3.5.

I downloaded the update directly and I'm trying to install it now - but it's saying the same thing! Of course, now it's doing it in the regular installer window and not Software Update, but it's stuck on the first thing: "locating software to update".

What gives? So now I can no longer update my OS? I'll restart and try again.

Restart fixed it. Weird. It's optimizing now.
