Hi, All!

I'm wondering what kind of license for Quicktime comes with a new Mac. I had heard/read somewhere that you get the full version of some bundled software, and it kind of stuck with me that Quicktime was one of those.

I'd appreciate any information on this.

Just a "Standard" license. Not a "Pro" license...

They used to bundle QT Pro licenses with the OS way back in the 8.5 days.

It'd be nice if they started doing that again, but currently they don't.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

at least with the "pro" machines, that would make sense. when you look at all the "consumer" software that the imac, emac and ibook come with that the powermacs and powerbooks do not - the assumption always being that the "pro's" like to use their own professional software...well, they call it quick time *pro* - why not throw that little bone in with the pro computers at least.

Upgrade to QuickTime Pro.

The "Pro" thing is a little disingenuous - I think that in a sense, QuickTime is actually an ordinary shareware application. You get a nag screen and a few features disabled until you register it by upgrading to QT Pro.

I just wish you didn't have to keep buying upgrades every time a new version of QuickTime came out.

I did this a while ago - can't remeber if it was OS 9 or X, but, change the date to 30 years in the future, open Quicktime and click on the "Later" button, it notes the date and will nag a few days later - however, seeing as the date is 30 years in the future it is never asked again - well not in the computer's lifetime anyway. This worked for me but I have QT Pro now so can't say for sure it works in OS X (or just OS 9).

Thanks for everybody's inputs. The nag screen is one of the biggest issues that has bugged me (and not just on the iBook!). The other real issue was being able to save streamed QuickTime movies. Since Pro is not terribly expensive, I may go ahead and buy it if I ever feel that burning need to save a movie trailer or something...

Thanks again!

Another thing is that you can't play movies in full screen mode without Pro. This is stupid, because both WMP and Real for OS X (both of which are terrible applications written by Apple's competitors) allow full screen mode in the free versions of their applications. That should at least be included with the standard version. And the nag screen is very dumb for a bundled Apple application. It should only ask the first time, and then leave you alone.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

I agree, FS isn't exactly a pro feature. There are several apps around that allow you to use the full screen feature in QT without having the pro version.

There are also other non-legit options that allow the full screen mode to be used.

One of the screenshots of the WWDC Tiger build that was posted on the web shortly after the keynote seems to imply that the unregistered version of QT Player in Tiger allows full-screen playback. Here's hoping that the next version for other OSes allows it as well…
