Are you referring to the fact that your status indicators are shapes instead of aqua balls? If so, go to iChat's General preference pane and uncheck "Use shapes to indicate status."

sorry, i meant to explain in the original post... no, the people are all spread out.. amongst the people that aren't online..

i have it set to show offline buddies, and normally they're all at the bottom, listed after the people who are online

Go to the View menu and select 'Sort by Availability'
