Finally upgraded to Panther with the Erase and Install option for a fresh start. Cloned my computer with CCC and backed up my Home folder too just for good measure.

I'm copying items from the Home folder over one by one since I don't mind re-doing preferences for most apps. But I'm getting tripped up on Mail and Address Book. Here's the deal:

- Can import Mailboxes over no problem, but the Rules got left behind. I copied over the preference file and everything seems OK. But the rules I had were associated with Groups in Address Book.

- I Exported all of my vCards in 10.2.8 and it created one big vcf file. Importing this or double-clicking it transfers them all into Address Book on Panther. No problem. But the pix aren't there, and neither are the Groups. For the former, I went to my Home folder backup (User\Library\Applicaiton Support\AddressBook\Images) and copied over the files from the Images folder. They didn't show up. :-( For the latter, I suppose I could just recreate the groups since I don't have a crazy amount of entries.

So, I guess I'm asking several things. The reason why I'm copying over folders one at a time from my Home backup is two-fold: don't wanna carry over any potential corrupted preferences, and with updated apps like Mail in Panther, I'm not sure if it'll screw things up to have Jag Mail prefs overwriting Panther ones (though with Mail, I figured it was too much hassle to recreate this particular pref file).

Should I just overwrite my Panther Address Book files with the Jag ones? Will this take care of pix and groups, and carryover to my Jag prefs in Panther Mail? (My head is spinning--hope this is clear).

I checked for scripts that might address this: nada. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you could just drag your whole mail folder over ... as well as Address Book

Thanks for the reply bergy. I figured it out though (after some time). Panther Help is great! Probably not the most gracefil way to go about things, but it worked for me.

1.) Delete the AddressBook folder in User\Library\Application Support - since I had already messed with Address Book on the Panther install, it created these files.

2.) From the backup of my Home folder, copy over the AddressBook folder. Same location in the source and target.

3.) Bam, everything including pix and groups are where I want them. Whew!

As for Mail, I didn't copy everything over like above:

1.) Imported Mail(boxes) from within Mail. Just pointed it to the backup.

2.) This created an Import folder. I had to mess around in the Finder and rearrange the mbox files, etc.--move them out of the Import folder that got created in Mail. Also, since I have a lot of sub-inboxes/folders for different kinds of mail, I had to place these ones in the right place. Not as difficult as it sounds, I just compared what the setup was like on my backup.

Again, not very graceful, but it worked. And surprisingly no screwy permissions. Hooray!
