I recently found myself utterly befuddled by my version of iTunes (v 4.6, obtained with iLife '04). It appears that, for no reason I can understand, files and/or folders in my music listing are disappearing without a trace. I am the owner of these files, so no other user could have deleted them - and God knows I didn't.

I've been trying to find some info as to precisely what is going on here - nothing ever disappears from non-music folders (to the best of my knowledge), and nothing is ever in my Trash. I have checked the locations where the files should be - sometimes they're there, sometimes not. It'll just happen, every little while, that little exclamation mark icons will appear next to some tracks of mine, causing me to notice it.

Please tell me someone else knows what's going on here.

(iMac G4, 1 Ghz, OS 10.3, in case it matters.)

Do a search "Everywhere" for "iTunes Music" folders. How many folders do you find, and where are they located?

There are 2. One is in my home folder, and the other is in the 'Shared' user folder, because all the users on my machine share music with each other. The one in my home folder contains nothing (and never has, afaik). My default one has been changed in my preferences to the Shared folder.

Thanks, btw.

The one in your Home folder should still contain the "iTunes 4 Music Library" files (which are the databases that list the contents of your Library and playlists). Is it possible that these have been corrupted?

It does contain the iTunes Library file. Could it be corrupted? Should I reinstall iTunes?
