Hello
I just got an email from earthlink that they are updateing and ask that people use an authenticated SMTP email server to send email to cut down on spam

this would decrease unauthorized users using earthlinkl to send spam I think

but they arn't too clear on it and Id like more details of the concept before I change to the authenticated use.

they don't say if that all that will bew available.

Id just like to learn more about it.

thanks rotut

In Mail, go to Preferences. Then go to Accounts. Choose your account, and at the bottom near SMTP there should be a Server Settings button. Click on that, change Authentication to Password, enter your username and password, and you should be all set.

This is a legitimate measure for them to take - it will reduce the ability of spammers to abuse their SMTP servers.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

You can also do this in Entourage as well. The setting is called "Require username/password for outgoing mail" or something like that. I'll check when I get home.

If they're moving to authenticated SMTP in an effort to reduce spammers, then of course they're not going to let you use unauthenticated SMTP anymore. That would be stupid.

Authenticated SMTP is exactly like what you've been using all these years for outgoing mail, except now it will ask for a username and password. That's all. Nothing to be afraid of. If you tell your mail client to remember your username and password then it won't even ask you.
