Sorry if this is a silly question, but I installed firefox on my computer (download disk image, copy firefox into my applications folder, not too hard). Everything seems fine, so I double click firefox. The icon appears and disappears twice in the task bar before staying there, firefox opens with the firefox website, but my hard drive continues to work really hard and my network usage seems to be really high for no apparent reason (I didn't actually do anything with firefox, just opened it, but I let my computer work for maybe 30 seconds. I'm on a PB G4 1.25 GHZ so I thought that was a bit much for just starting the program). So I unplug my network cord for a second to see what's going on, and everything stops. I plugged back in and all seems fine now (the firefox website works without repeating the trouble), but I was wondering if something odd is going on or if that is standard behavior (maybe it's copying some preferences, etc. I don't know). This hasn't happened with any other software installs, so that's why I'm curious. Thanks for any thoughts.

I wouldn't worry about it.
I've had a copy of firefox (well, pheonix (was it?) before that) for years and this never happened. However, I just bought a new iBook on friday and put firefox on it, and the exact same thing happened to me as you're describing. I can only assume it was just taking up loads of time writing it's preferences etc, as it never happened on upgrading the copies I had on my old G3.
Anyway - after that happening (the opening/quitting in the dock and the heavy disk/CPU usage) straight after I installed, I've had no further problems.

I think this only happens when you run Frefox for the first time. That is when the software checks if it should import any bookmars, and sets up the files in the Application Support folder. This takes some time.
After the the first run, this should go away. At least it did in my case.

This is correct.
Also, when you upgrade Firefox it will do it the first time you launch the new version.

Yep, and Camino does this as well. I'm assuming Mozilla-based products in general do this, regardless of platform. On Windows they do it.

I have not had any success with firefox. When I download and install it, it is always broken. For example - hitting command-L does not highlight the address bar - last time i tried it opened a new window... WTF? It is just extremely shaky and not at all usable. I've installed it several times with the same results. Gonna stop messing with it now.
Too bad since it is my primary browser on the PC at work.

I, and many other people, use it all the time with no problems. I don't know what you're doing wrong, but have you tried trashing your Firefox profile? Old profiles are often incompatible with newer versions of Firefox.
