I am using Quicktime Pro 6.5.1, MPEG-2 Playback, and VOB files from MacRipper. When I try to import or open a VOB file, I get the following error message:

"Couldn't open the file because the movie contains an incorrect duration."

Can anyone tell me what the problem may be and how to correct it? I had read on several boards that MPEG-2 Playback would allow me to play and edit the VOB files, and so I bought it.

I need to edit and save short clips from movies for educational use (which is allowed, up to three minutes per movie).

That depends on what you mean with 'edit'. You can play MPEG-2 files and export them, but you can't do copy-paste commands with any MPEG files.
There are tools you can use to losslessly edit the files, like mpgtxwrap, but the results aren't always that good. You might want to look into encoding the video to an editing format like DV. If you want to do that you can have a look at MPEG Streamclip, which can convert MPEG-1/2 video to DV. Unfortunately MPEG Streamclip does not support AC3 audio yet, so if your VOB file has that you'll need to demultiplex the file using something like bbDemux and then decode the audio to AIFF with something like mAC3dec.
